Verdes Anos is an analog photography and editorial project centred on nature and biodiversity in Porto. The project brings together a series of my own photographs, taken on film and later curated and designed into a photographic publication as part of the Photography Laboratory course.

The photographs were developed into a photobook in which image selection, sequencing and page composition were used to create a calm and continuous visual rhythm.

The publication combines colour and black-and-white photography, alternating between full-page images and more open compositions to explore different ways of observing the landscape.

The project takes its name from Verdes Anos, the 1964 composition by the Portuguese guitarist Carlos Paredes. Throughout the publication, fragments of the song’s chord progression appear alongside the photographs. Rather than functioning as captions, the chords follow the original musical sequence and are distributed across the pages, creating a parallel rhythm between music and image.

More than six decades after Verdes Anos was composed, the project draws a connection between the atmosphere of the music and the contemporary landscapes photographed in Porto. Despite the distance in time, both share a sense of calm and stillness.

Three copies of the photobook open on a dark table
The photobook slipped into its dark green case, tie undone
Spread - bare branches against a sunlit ochre façade
Spread - acanthus in flower against dark foliage, chords in the gutter
Spread - a conifer turning gold against a pale sky
Spread - leaves and wire in black and white, the river beyond
